For most households, sheltering with filtered indoor air is the right approach during smoke events. But when smoke is severe and prolonged — multiple days at AQHI 10+, indoor air that cannot be kept reasonably clean, or a household member with a serious heart or lung condition — leaving the smoke zone may be the better option. Health Canada notes that some communities have established cleaner-air shelters during major events; check with your municipality. If you have a respiratory condition and your symptoms are worsening despite indoor filtration, consult your healthcare provider about temporarily relocating. Choose a destination outside the smoke plume, not just a slightly less smoky town downwind. Use the Environment Canada smoke forecast and the AQHI map — or AirNow (airnow.gov) and the US Fire and Smoke Map in the US — to identify where the air is actually clean. Bring medications, masks for the drive, and the same vehicle emergency kit you would use for any fire-season trip. Leaving for clean air is not panic — for vulnerable people it is straightforward medical risk management, and the air can take days or weeks to clear in major plumes.

Did you know?

Multi-day AQHI 10+ in a home that cannot be kept reasonably clean is a medical reason to leave town — for vulnerable people, geography is the most effective filter.
