Alberta publishes a separate emergency kit checklist specifically for pets, because evacuation centres and host households almost always need proof of vaccinations and identification before they can take an animal in. Pre-pack a carrier or sturdy leash for every pet, a few days of food and water, current vaccination and licence records in a waterproof bag, a recent photo in case you become separated, any medications, a litter tray and litter for cats, and a familiar blanket or toy. Make sure tags and microchip records show a current phone number. For households with livestock or horses, plan trailer access, a destination stable or pasture, and a route well in advance — large-animal evacuation is much harder to improvise than small-pet evacuation. Many western communities, in both Canada and the US, have volunteer livestock rescue networks, and reaching out before fire season is the time to learn who to call. Never plan to leave a pet behind: shelters fill quickly, and animals left in a structure during an evacuation rarely fare well.
Most evacuation centres will not accept a pet without proof of vaccinations — a waterproof bag with vet records and a current photo is as essential as the carrier itself.
