Fire-safety programs like FireSmart and Firewise USA describe fire-resistant plants as having moist, supple leaves, water-like sap with little or no odour, and limited dead or papery material. Native broadleaf species fit that description well. Good choices for western yards include Garry oak, bigleaf maple, hawthorn, Oregon grape, salal, saskatoon (serviceberry), red-flowering currant, oceanspray, kinnickinnick, and stonecrop (sedum) — but treat these as regional examples and match species to your own climate zone. These hold water in their tissues, so they resist ignition from drifting embers and slow the spread of flame compared with resinous conifers. Stick to recommended species for your area — a coastal plant may not thrive in a hot, dry interior valley, and vice versa. Group plants in small islands separated by gravel, stone or short, well-watered lawn rather than continuous beds. That breaks up the path a flame would need to follow toward your house. Keep all plants pruned, watered through the dry months, and free of accumulated dead leaves and twigs at their base. Even a fire-resistant species becomes fuel once it dries out or is buried in litter. The FireSmart BC plant tool (or your regional extension office or fire-safe council in the US) lets you filter by Home Ignition Zone, climate region and growing conditions so you can pick species that match your site instead of guessing from a generic list.

Did you know?

Plants with moist, supple leaves and watery sap resist ignition from drifting embers — native broadleaf species like saskatoon and Oregon grape are far harder to ignite than resinous conifers.
